Profile

Mt. Vernon Cemetery was established in 1864 as a "for-profit" enterprise of some of Atchison's earliest settlers.  Starting with 20 acres, it grew by an additional 20 acres in the early 1880's.  Within its boundaries lie 3 early Kansas governors, 1 early Kansas Senator, the youngest PonyExpress rider ever hired, and a Civil War medal-of-honor winner among countless others directly involved in the early settlement & growth of both Atchison & the State of Kansas.

An all volunteer Board of Directors is responsible for the care, maintenance. and preservation of Mt. Vernon Cemetary.

Mt. Vernon Cemetery is on the Registry of Historic Kansas Places (2024) & on the National Registry of Historic Places (2024).
