Specific Need
Ahte Atchison & Western Track Revitalization and Improvement Program (TRIP) will provide several key community needs, including educational workforce development opportunities, safe recreational infrastructure and continued access to a unique local tourism asset.
This project will ensure reliable mini-train operations for the next 30+ years. By replacing worn and aging rail infrastructure it directly enhances safety for passengers, operators, and equipment by reducing risks associated with deteriorating track conditions and ensures compliance with safe operating standards.
Over a five-year implementation period, the program will allow for the acquisition of materials and supplies. This will allow for coordinated volunteer labor to complete system-wide improvements. This phased approach ensures consistent community involvement while maintaining financial feasibility.
Overall, TRIP strengthens local tourism, supports workforce education, and preserves a valued community attraction and railroad history that serves both residents and visitors to Northeast Kansas.

The North East Kansas Railroaders, Inc. was established in 1986 as the North East Kansas Model Railroad Club. As interest in railroading reached far more than just in modeling, so the name was changed to the North East Kansas Railroaders Society. In 1988, the North East Kansas Railroaders Society incorporated and applied for a not-for-profit corporation status. We became a 501(C)(3) organization. The organization was gifted the little train which operates at 200 South 10th Street. This is a 12" gauge railroad that children and adults enjoy riding. The train operates on weekends from May thru October, Saturday - 10 am - 5 pm and Sundays 12 - 4 pm - weather permitting. The little train railroad became known as the Atchison & Western Railroad. Members from the organization maintain and operate the "LITTLE TRAIN". All rides on the little train are free.
The North East Kansas Railroaders members also participate in model train shows across the area. They showcase the organizations HO scale model railroads. A number of members maintain their own HO scale model railroads. The organization also has one set up at their club house at 1440 North 6th in Atchison.
This organization is made up of members not only from Northeast Kansas, but in the surrounding states and beyond.
