Atchison County Historical Society

Specific Need

Money is always an issue. This year the county commissioner discontinued our annualsupport through the county tax system. This has left a large hole in our financialsupport. In addition to that loss in our general fund, we are trying to generate support for the rehabilitation of the Black Business District and the Farmington Christian Church.

Mission

The mission of the Atchison County Historical Society is to preserve, promote, record and share the history and historical artifacts of Atchison County, Kansas and increase public appreciation of our heritage and culture.

Profile

Founded in 1967, The Atchison County Historical Society is committed to the principle that a citizenry must possess knowledge of their past to make informed decisions in shaping the future of our community. We believe the thoughtful and proactive preservation of our rich heritage is the best building block of the future. Our museum occupies the historic ATSF Freight Depot at 200 S 10th St in Atchison. The Historical Society also is working on developing the Black Business District in the 1100 Block of N 7th St and the Farmington Christian Church in rural Atchison County.
