Goal: $15,000.00
Specific Need
For 74 years, Atchison families have gathered on the Fourth of July to watch the sky light up in celebration of our country and our community. It’s one of those traditions that feels like home — kids running around with glow sticks, neighbors catching up, and everyone looking up together as the fireworks begin.
Like many small towns, we’re facing fewer volunteers and rising costs. Fireworks, safety equipment, and event expenses continue to climb, and keeping this tradition going gets a little harder each year.
That’s why we created the Atchison Community 4th of July Celebration Foundation — to make sure this show doesn’t fade away. If this event has ever meant something to you or your family, we invite you to give what you can. Every dollar helps keep the patriotism alive and the fireworks flying high over Atchison.
Mission
To preserve Atchison’s long-standing Fourth of July tradition by bringing our community together for an annual celebration that honors our nation, celebrates our hometown spirit, and creates lasting memories for families. With local support and shared pride, we work to keep this tradition strong and ensure the people — and the sky — of Atchison continue to shine bright every Independence Day.Profile
For 74 years, the Fourth of July fireworks have been a defining part of Atchison’s identity. What started as a simple community gathering has grown into one of our town’s most beloved traditions — a night where families spread out blankets, kids wave glow sticks, and neighbors come together to celebrate the country we call home.
For decades, the fireworks were held at the Atchison High School football field, where generations of families watched the show from the bleachers and played field games. In 2006, the celebration moved to Warnock Lake, giving the community a bigger space, a beautiful backdrop, and a new chapter in the tradition.
For 73 of those years, the Atchison Lions Club carried this tradition with pride. Their dedication, volunteer hours, and commitment kept the fireworks lighting up the sky for generations. In 2025, the Atchison Sons of the American Legion stepped in to continue that legacy, ensuring the celebration didn’t miss a beat.
As times change, small communities like ours face new challenges. Volunteer time is harder to come by, and the cost of fireworks, safety measures, and event operations continues to rise. Yet the meaning behind this tradition — the patriotism, the togetherness, the memories — is as strong as ever.
That’s why the Atchison Community 4th of July Celebration Foundation was created: to preserve this event, honor the groups who carried it for decades, and make sure the fireworks keep flying for future generations. Our mission is simple — keep the tradition alive, keep the community together, and keep the sky over Atchison shining bright every Independence Day.
Through local support, shared pride, and a community that believes in what this day represents, we’re committed to protecting this celebration for years to come.
