The Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to the world-renowned aviator Amelia Earhart — whose dreams of flying began in her Atchison, Kansas, hometown. Since its founding in 2016, the Foundation has dedicated its efforts to inspiring future aviation and aerospace leaders through the story of Amelia Earhart’s tenacity and determination to overcome obstacles. The Foundation opened the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum in 2023 with the support of generous individual donors and grants from national, regional, and local businesses and foundations.
Profile
The Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation honors the world-renowned aviation legacy of Amelia Earhart — whose dreams of flying began in her Atchison, Kansas, hometown. In 2016, the Foundation acquired Muriel — the world’s last remaining Lockheed Electra 10-E — an aircraft identical to the model Earhart flew on her final flight, and raised funds to build a 17,000 square-foot hangar and terminal worthy of Amelia’s legacy and reminiscent of the Art Deco style of her time in the 1920s and 1930s. The Foundation then led a capital campaign to create the new Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum with Muriel as the centerpiece.
Today, visitors can journey through Amelia Earhart’s adventurous life as a trailblazing aviator who defied the odds to pursue her dreams at the newly opened Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum. Visitors explore the 14 interactive STEM and history storytelling exhibits highlighting Earhart’s extraordinary life — from growing up in Atchison, Kansas, to the height of her worldwide fame as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Since opening, the Museum has welcomed over 60,000 visitors from all 50 states and over 35 countries.
